Regional offices assisting U.S. citizens with Social Security benefits are being closed by the Trump administration.
The Department of Government Efficiency has terminated leases for five of Georgia’s 34 Social Security offices.
Offices in Brunswick, Gainesville, Columbus, Vidalia, and Thomasville will close, according to the DOGE website.
The department claims the closures will save the federal government hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Physical Social Security offices serve as a point of contact for seniors and others using the service.
Georgia U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock condemned the closures, saying they will make it harder for seniors to access services they need.
“Georgia has the highest number of SSA offices closed for any state so far,” Sen. Raphael Warnock said in a statement Friday.
“Georgia is losing *5* Social Security offices,” Warnock wrote in a post on X Friday afternoon. “This will make it harder for seniors, especially in rural GA, to enroll, solve payment issues, and report fraud. I will do everything I can to fight this reckless action and remain focused on getting our seniors the benefits they paid for & rely on.”
