Republican Fitz Johnson has served on the Georgia Public Service Commission for four years. Gov. Brian Kemp appointed him to the five-member panel that regulates utilities in July 2021 to replace Chuck Eaton, who left the post when Kemp appointed him to be a superior court judge.
November’s special election for the PSC is his first opportunity to face voters in the statewide race for his post. He’s running against Democrat Peter Hubbard. Johnson in 2014 ran for election to the office of Georgia State Superintendent of Schools but lost in the Republican primary. He ran unsuccessfully for the Cobb County Commission in 2020.
Johnson lives in Atlanta. He and his wife have four adult children. Johnson earned a bachelor’s from The Citadel, a master’s from Troy University and a law degree from the University of Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medical Service Corps Officer, spending 10 years on active duty and 11 years in the reserves. Johnson is the former owner of the Atlanta Beat women’s professional soccer team and is a Realtor with RE/MAX Pure. He is also the owner of ASID Group International, providing professional services to governments and private enterprises.
He is only the second African American to serve on the PSC and is the first Black Republican to do so. He was appointed while an ongoing lawsuit challenged whether electing commissioners statewide discriminated against Black people. The at-large elections were eventually upheld by the courts, but PSC elections were postponed and rescheduled.
One result is that Johnson is now running for a special one-year term. The seat will be contested again next year to return it to its constitutionally mandated six-year term cycle.
Johnson, through spokeswoman Carmen Bergman declined to schedule a live digital, phone, or in-person interview by The Current GA, which we request for all candidate profiles before an election.
