Liberty County is home to many significant people and events of the Revolutionary War. Fort Morris was built to defend what was then the bustling seaport of Sunbury, on the marsh in what is now unincorporated Midway. On Nov. 25, 1788, the British Navy, who outnumbered the Americans nearly two to one, demanded that Col. John McIntosh surrender the fort. McIntosh’s reply was “Come and take it” — a bold bluff that worked, until the British came back with reinforcements two months later and did exactly as McIntosh had suggested.
McIntosh’s heroic gesture is remembered by descendants of Revolutionary War patriots, such as the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Children of the American Revolution, and other groups like the Mayflower Society. Members came from chapters across Georgia and out of state to reenact the moment, sing patriotic songs, demonstrate aspects of colonial life, and place a cannon inside the fort to serve as a teaching tool for children.
