It’s important to understand wrongful death laws, legal claims where family members can bring a civil lawsuit against a person who intentionally or carelessly caused the family member’s death, which is different from any criminal charges.

Katherine Drabiak, has a law degree and is a professor at the University of South Florida College of Public Health and College of Medicine. Drabiak’s teaching and research focuses in health law, public health, and medical ethics. Drabiak has authored numerous law review articles and her scholarship has appeared in a variety of other journals including American Medical Association Journal of Ethics; Bioethics; and the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics. She has experience consulting in both research ethics and clinical ethics to develop guidance policies and best practices. She is currently a member of Advent Health’s Medical Ethics Committee, has worked with the state and local bar associations, and the Florida Department of Health.
