A tale of two agendas

If you don’t know what’s coming up at a public meeting, you’re not alone. 

Sometimes the folks who are asked to make decisions on public property and millions in public spending don’t know what’s going to be on the agenda either. Or they lack details. 

For example, Chatham County Commission Chair Chester Ellis balked when he was asked — on a day’s notice — to approve a $250,000 grant from a regional development authority for well owners whose underground water pressure may be affected by wells that would serve Hyundai. 

 “Why didn’t we know last month we had to get this done?” he said. “It’s because not enough information is being given to those of us who have to report to our citizens.”

For an alternate history, take Savannah.  A week ahead of city council’s Aug. 8 meeting, District 2 Alderman Detric Leggett got a draft agenda — and was surprised to see a proposal for a private nonprofit to take substantial control of Forsyth Park via a partnership with the city.

That gave Leggett enough time to get the vote postponed.

Agenda-setting practices vary by place and by agency. Some items appear more-or-less automatically, like recommendations from planning and zoning boards. Other measures may get added by a county or city manager, an agency executive director, or by an elected official.  

Moral of the story: read the agendas when you can.  Some agencies post detailed agendas days in advance of a meeting.  Others do not.
