Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

All 11 million or so Georgia residents expect more-or-less similar basic public services, like pothole-paving or a police department.  

But invisible city and county lines divide responsibilities for those jobs among hundreds of local governments. 

Sometimes local governments decide to share the load, which makes sense. But every time, that also means a tangle of legal questions that two or more governments have to figure out.  For example, Walthourville picks up the trash in its own boundaries as well as in Allenhurst, so both have to figure out new agreements and payments when Walthourville privatizes trash collection.

Governments typically negotiate a contract called an  “intergovernmental agreement” when they decide to share a job. An IGA lays out each government’s obligations — like the money they’ll have to pay — and what each gets in return. On Tuesday, Effingham County is set to consider an IGA on sharing the cost of a housing study with neighboring counties and Savannah.

IGAs are public documents, which you can request from your city or county.

Our list of public meetings and agendas for the next two weeks depends on what local governments publish online — some already include documents like IGAs linked from their agendas.  If there’s a place you’d like to see on this list, let us know and we’ll try to add it.
