Camden airport on agenda
“Significant towers and other obstructions” near potential runways are among the “concerns” shared by federal and state aviation regulators so far this year in their review of Camden County’s regional airport plans.
The county started considering a new airport as early as 2001, when Kings Bay Naval Base first announced security concerns that would close St. Marys’ nearby airport in 2017. Camden’s 2024 airport study does not list the potential sites, but the FAA says the county’s process hasn’t met federal standards.
Building an airport is potentially unpopular, as Bryan County airport boosters learned last year when residents there started inspecting airport plans and saw millions in federal subsidies.
An airport discussion is on the Camden County Commission’s Tuesday evening agenda.
