Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Calling an auditor, just to be sure

Every year, every local government is supposed to get an auditor to review its books.

Expenses and revenues need to be tracked accurately, and agency debts and assets need to be known to the public, for example.  Auditors also look for any poor accounting procedures that might make fraud easier.

No one enjoys an audit but it’s useful for avoiding future problems.

Woodbine residents are in revolt after the city lost access to state grants and put its charter at risk by missing audits, The Current GA‘s Daneen Khan reported last month.

Walthourville is recovering from going years without audits under a previous mayor — and now it’s possible that the city has racked up payroll tax arrears that went unnoticed, The Current‘s Robin Kemp reported last week.

Many local government financial reports are in the University of Georgia’s online library. If you need one that’s not there, call or email your local agency and ask for their audited financial statements. Fair warning: most reports are boring because auditors find nothing amiss.

Any financial problems in your local government may well come up at a public meeting. Or an announcement of a clean audit may come up too. Check out our calendar of public meetings for the next two weeks, and if you go to a meeting and send a selfie to staff@thecurrentga.org, we’ll send you a t-shirt from The Current.

This list starts with an automated collection that does not involve AI. It is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
