Find your public meetings, agendas
December 16, 2024
Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.
Paying for someone else’s fire
Firefighters run toward trouble: An invisible city or county line doesn’t mean anything when there’s a house on fire.
But those invisible lines mean a lot to folks back in the offices who have to figure out how to pay for all this. The money all comes from local taxes, so nobody’s too keen on buying expensive fire trucks that get sent to help people miles away who aren’t paying into the system.
Some cities set up their own fire stations and tax their residents for it. Some cities don’t, and may instead pay into a network of county fire stations.
And some cities are working on the question. Midway residents pay county property taxes, but until recently had a city volunteer fire department that was working in substandard conditions. The Current’s Robin Kemp has been reporting on fire risk and fire protection in Midway and Liberty County for months. Her latest report details how the Midway City Council delayed approval of its entire annual budget as it negotiates with the county about fire services.
The next action on the question is set to happen tonight at Midway City Hall, with a final budget presentation at 6:00 p.m. and a council meeting at 6:45. It’s one of the cities that appears on our list of public meetings over the next two weeks.
As always, if there is a public entity you’d like to see, let us know. We’ll try to add it. This list depends on what local governments offer on the internet.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.
You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
