More developments, more money

Folks in Bryan County, home of the new Hyundai megasite, are feeling kind of impacted — impacted by traffic, by new warehouses, by new homes.  The county government is considering a “transportation impact fee” on new developments near the interstate to pay for work on roads that aren’t quiet country routes anymore.

Impact fees are common in communities dealing with the costs that come with growth. Unincorporated south Bryan already charges impact fees. Think of it this way: A new shopping center on a two-lane road is liable to need a turning lane, a light, maybe a median on the public road to handle the traffic without causing a mile of backups. So developers have to help pay for that.

So far, Bryan has published a study about road demand in a northeast portion of the county around Interstate 16, looking toward the idea of impact fees there.  The Impact Fee Committee will hear a presentation about the report on Thursday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Also noted: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is giving a community update in Brunswick on the LCP Chemicals site and other polluted Superfund sites on Tuesday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m.
