Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Private actions, public problems

Cities and counties use courts to enforce local rules about health and cleanliness. For example, code enforcement is going to visit anybody who owns a city lot piled with rat-filled garbage.

Local governments resort to courts with larger complaints as well. The Current’s Mary Landers reported last week that Savannah is taking 65 companies to court that make PFAS or use these “forever chemicals” in their manufacturing processes. The city claims those defendants have polluted river water that the city then has to clean up before it can be piped to residents’ homes. The city wants those companies to help pay the cost of water treatment. In other parts of the country, some local governments have already won settlements in similar suits.

States, cities and counties also pursued lawsuits against tobacco companies in the 1990s and opioid manufacturers in this century, on the grounds that those companies’ products caused costly public health crises. Both industries are still making settlement payouts.

If you’re interested in what your local government is doing, who they might be suing or what messes they’re encountering — check out our list of public meetings for the next two weeks and click on some agendas if the government has posted them already. Let us know how we’re doing with this list, how you’re using it or ideas you have for improving it.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
