Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Positive vibes only

Political scientists struggle to answer why anyone goes to council meetings, runs for office or even votes, because the time put in almost always exceeds any individual benefit.

Most people don’t vote in local elections, “often leaving critical decisions in the hands of small, unrepresentative groups, creating an electorate that’s disproportionately white, elderly and affluent,” writes Sean Richey at Georgia State University for our partner newsroom The Conversation.

But people who like or love their town are more likely to volunteer, attend council meetings and contact their elected officials, he finds.

Coastal Georgia communities offer a lot to love that The Current GA reporters saw last week for Martin Luther King Jr., Day, from a big parade in Savannah to a little playground spruced up by Brunswick volunteers.
