Camden data center debates

Camden County is figuring out what to do when its nine-month data center moratorium ends in February.

“Discussion regarding data center ordinance” is the whole agenda for a county commission work session on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. 

Separately, Florida-based Camden landowner Kirk Tovey invites the public to discussions of a “Southeast Georgia Innovation Campus,” which he envisions as a 700-acre development anchored by a data center along Interstate 95 on land owned by companies he controls. The land is partially in Kingsland, partially in unincorporated Camden. 

Touting consultation from Georgia Tech, Tovey has announced public meetings on Oct. 1, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Camden Center at the College of Coastal Georgia in Kingsland. 

When Tovey’s data center idea first came to light through a rezoning application first reported by The Current GA in April, it raised concerns from residents and, unusually, the U.S. Navy.  Kingsland passed its own one-year data center moratorium in May.
