Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Effingham meetings to divvy OpenAI money

Public anger greeted the sudden and scant announcement of OpenAI’s upcoming arrival in Rincon, wooed to southeast Georgia by a county agency and a tax break.

Since then, local agencies that support the coming of a power-hungry data center have countered with a costly charm offensive and long public meetings to win over residents, as The Current GA has reported.

And now, local officials are promising to cut homeowners’ taxes long before any data center opens. Details are set to emerge in public meetings today and Tuesday about a promised cumulative property tax cut of six mils for at least three years — on a $300,000 house, that would mean $720 a year.

The tax cut would be made possible by part of the $350 million collected from selling public land for the data center.

The school board meets this morning at 8:30 to talk tax cuts

This afternoon, the agency that led in steering OpenAI to the county, the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, will have a special-called meeting at 4 p.m. to discuss suspending the property taxes it collects from homeowners.

Finally the county commission meets Tuesday at 5 p.m. and is set to consider the tax break as well.

Even if you don’t live in Effingham, every coastal county has a commission, a school board and a development authority and we’re tracking their meetings here. Email any questions to staff@thecurrentga.org and as always,  if you go to a meeting and send us a selfie, we’ll send you a t-shirt from The Current GA.

This list starts with an automated collection that does not involve AI. It is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
