Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Regular folks can join government

Keith Spitznogle got extra civic in 2022, when he looked at his local government and thought he saw a problem. Back then, he was concerned that voting equipment might not work, that the machines might have been made to cheat. He decided to look into it and he applied to join the Bryan County Election Board.

And since his appointment to that board, he’s turned into a supporter of the voting system, having learned firsthand about election equipment, software, backups, paper trails and audits, he told The Current’s Gillian Goodman in an election-night conversation at a Pembroke polling place.

Spitznogle is one of thousands of normal people who join local public boards and help oversee elections, tax assessments, public health, historic preservation rules and more.

Most of the time, public board members have the same experience as Spitznogle: they don’t find conspiracy, they find local government folks just doing their jobs and working in good faith.

Sure, there’s always something that could be better, everywhere, in every department. But that’s where a good-faith board member might contribute their knowledge, time or network.

Residents typically apply to their county commission or city council members to join a board for four years at a time. When a seat opens up, counties and cities post notices somewhere and ask for applications. McIntosh County posted a typical example this week: They’re seeking applicants for the zoning board and the industrial development authority board.

Try visiting some meetings and maybe consider applying to be on the other side of the table.  Our list of public meetings over the next two weeks depends on what local governments publish online. Let us know how we’re doing and keep scrolling, it’s a long list.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
