Find your public meetings, agendas
July 29, 2024
Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.
Dollars from DC
State and local governments put their own names on public services — like the Georgia Ports Authority, county public schools and city water works. But often, area taxpayers didn’t pay for these things alone. The layers of government higher up might have kicked in some money too. And sometimes, that higher-level money comes in the form of competitive grants.
A case in point will be the subject of a meeting Wednesday, July 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as Chatham County invites folks to a public information open house on Safe Streets for All. The U.S. Department of Transportation sends SS4A grants to cities and counties to improve sidewalks, crossings, roads and other works, with the goal of preventing injuries and deaths in the transportation system.
But before a place can get in the running for big federal money that will put shovels in the ground, it has to work up a good pitch. With $50,000 of its own money and $200,000 in a relatively small SS4A planning grant, the county has already drawn up a report on existing conditions in unincorporated Chatham and is asking residents to submit comments about where they feel there are road risks.
Savannah is a little further along in the process: it has a plan already and has asked for a $23 million SS4A grant. The city hasn’t gotten one so far, but plans to re-apply.
Meanwhile, we’re watching about 50 public agencies on the coast for regular public meeting announcements. This list of meetings for the next two weeks depends on what local governments offer on the internet. Some publish schedules for various boards and authorities. Some publish meeting schedules far in advance, timely agendas and livestreams. Some do not. Let us know if there’s an agency you would like us to try and track.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.
You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
