Midway reopens fire department

Midway’s city council and mayor have spent the better part of a year putting out a slow-burning mess in their fire department. 

About this time last year, Midway had volunteer firefighters using end-of-life equipment and a moldy station as highlighted in investigations by The Current’s Robin Kemp.

And the questions Midway faced are the same for any small city: Should there be a city fire department, or is it better to buy into a county or larger city’s fire department? Is it easy or hard to work out a partnership?  Can volunteers do the job or is it better to hire full-time staff?  

These aren’t cheap questions: Two brand-new, fully-equipped fire trucks are costing Midway $1.7 million.

The state of Georgia is satisfied enough with the city’s efforts to rebuild its own fire department that, on July 31, it lifted a suspension on the Midway Fire Department’s certification.
