Map-making lessons

Glynn County parents are speaking up about an upcoming school board decision — how to draw a new map of elementary school attendance zones. 

Right now, some Brunswick children attend elementary schools on St. Simons Island; under the new proposed plan, city students would go to school closer to home.

In a new story, The Current’s Jabari Gibbs outlines how the rezoning touches on persistent issues from long school commutes to wealth disparity and racial integration. 

But population shifts in the north part of the county and a new school mean the system needs to redraw zones.  Figuring this out is just one of the complicated jobs of a school board and a community.

The Current follows about 50 agencies in Coastal Georgia and this list of meetings covers the next two weeks — keep scrolling, there are a lot.

Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.
