Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Cities, counties want you

A pitch well worth a mention landed in The Current’s inbox from the city of Richmond Hill in Bryan County.  They’re looking for residents to sit on city boards that oversee planning, historic preservation, downtown development and local government ethics.

Joining a board in any community means a commitment of probably a couple of nights a month. Then add on any number of emails, reports to read, things to learn, meetings, calls and decisions.

But Richmond Hill makes a well-put pitch for its residents’ time:  “Playing an active role in your community is a fundamental aspect of citizenship. By serving on a board or commission, you contribute to the well-being of your neighbors and help ensure that Richmond Hill remains a vibrant and thriving city.”

Every city and county in Georgia is like Richmond Hill: They need resident-participants in governance. To find openings where you live, do an internet search for your city or county and a phrase like “join a board.”  Or contact your own county commissioner or city council member and ask where the openings are listed. (Look up your elected officials on the Georgia My Voter page.) Check typical application questions on Richmond Hill’s online form.

In the meantime, consider going to a meeting, watching one online or reading the agenda for an introduction to your community’s governance. Our calendar below covers public meetings over the next two weeks.  Let us know how we’re doing with this list, how you’re using it or ideas you have for improving it.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
