Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.
How did they get on that board?
Many of the boards that do local public business are not elected boards — they’re appointed boards that do some narrowly defined job. Examples:
- A housing authority board only oversees housing assistance and publicly owned housing.
- A development authority board is concerned with bringing business to a place.
- A board of assessors is only worried about the fair valuation of properties for tax purposes.
Elected officials make the appointments to these specialist boards for the most part. In the best cases, this has the benefit of allowing the elected folks to share the workload with people who might have an expertise, or develop expertise, in some area of government and share it, even for little or no pay.
In the worst cases, it makes public board members accountable only to the friends who appointed them, rather than to taxpayers, public housing residents or other people who might care.
Our list of public meetings for the next two weeks depends on what local agencies publish on the internet. As always, if there is a public entity you’d like to see, let us know and we’ll add it if we can.
