I-16 corridor authority meets
For the first time since the Sept. 4 immigration raid on the HL-GA battery plant site at the Hyundai megasite in Ellabell, the local public agency that helps the corporation is having a public meeting.
But strain will be in the meeting room, if not on the written agenda of the Savannah Harbor-Interstate 16 Corridor Joint Development Authority. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has long justified the plant’s billions in state subsidies by arguing that assisting the company would mean jobs for Georgians. Yet federal agencies boasted about yanking some 475 unauthorized workers from the site in September. Workers with Korean ties benefited from a powerful employer to extract them from custody. Workers born in places like Mexico are not so well-protected. Meanwhile, construction of the battery plant is running late.
