Nickel refinery question reappears in Richmond Hill

Tuesday evening, Caesarstone Technologies will ask Richmond Hill to determine that the company’s vacant Belfast Commerce Center site could legally be used as a nickel refinery.

But Westwin Elements’ proposal for a nickel refinery on that site triggered widespread public backlash in January and February over concerns with pollution, the company’s legal record and its lack of transparency. Bryan County’s development authority broke off talks with the Oklahoma-based company. Bryan County opened an investigation into possible toxic waste on the site. Richmond Hill’s planning department determined that a nickel refinery didn’t fit the site’s zoning rules.

Members of Richmond Hill City Council, sitting as the Board of Zoning Appeals, will hear Caesarstone’s case for a nickel-friendly land use decision on Tuesday, June 2 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The public is invited.
