Data center idea heating up Port Wentworth
As all our devices communicate with data centers all day, new electricity demand from the warehouse-like, computer-filled buildings has sent Georgia Power to pull coal-fired power from as far away as Mississippi. A single data center’s water use can compare to that of tens of thousands of households.
Port Wentworth is experiencing the heat of these unpopular developments, because city council is considering adding data centers to the type of buildings welcome in its industrial zones. The first public hearing on the idea will happen at the Port Wentworth Planning Commission as early as its meeting on Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m..
Every Georgia community has a city or county planning board that reviews land use questions. Usually the agenda is rather sleepy work like hearings on rezoning requests for a parcel or two; or maybe reviewing a commercial site plan to make sure the buildings and signs will conform with rules.
The Current GA is covering about 60 agencies and counting in our list of public meetings over the next two weeks, and it might include your planning board. Let us know how we’re doing, what we should add, and how you use this list at staff@thecurrentga.org.
