What’s a millage rate?

Some cities,counties and school boards are advertising hearings on their millage rate for the upcoming tax year. Those taxes on typical properties pay for schools and other local services. One mill is one dollar of tax for every $1,000 dollars in building value.  

So a building valued at $100,000 at a millage rate of 10 mills would have a tax bill of $1,000.

The Savannah-Chatham school system’s millage rate announcement is an example — and in line with state law on tax announcements, it’s confusing.

Savannah-Chatham schools propose no changes to the tax rate: 17.631 mills.  But, because there are always new properties being built, and because values are going up, the school system would collect more money next year on the same millage rate.

So the school system must advertise this as an increase in property taxes and hold public hearings on it. 

Local governments may or may not advertise these hearings with the rest of the public meeting announcements, but entities are supposed to post a public notice of any hearings in their local newspaper, searchable here.  

We’re tracking public meetings of about 50 local agencies and as always, if there is a public entity you’d like to see, let us know. We’ll try to add it. What we can get depends on what local governments post on their websites.
