Sapelo, mainland land use

Another chapter in the yearslong fight over Sapelo Island zoning happens this week, with the county’s zoning board and county commission set to consider limiting house size on Sapelo Island to 1,550 square feet under roof with an additional 400-square-foot porch.

The island’s Hogg Hummock is one of the last intact communities of the descendants of enslaved West Africans known as the Gullah Geehcee; but the island has also attracted the interest of enough folks with big money and vacation dreams that some locals fear being priced off of their ancestral island.

Planning and Zoning meets Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at 200 Pine Street in Darien (see page 8 in The Darien News). The county commission meets Thursday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. at Old City Hall.

Back on the mainland, state environmental officials are holding a public meeting on a permit for a sort of community-size septic tank big enough to serve a 10-home short-term rental development on Landing Road near the Sapelo ferry dock.

The meeting is on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. at the McIntosh County Recreation Department at 402 Pack Street; scroll down to page 5 for the official announcement and comment instructions, or just head to the meeting. Environmental group One Hundred Miles says it has concerns.
