(Another) hearing on gambling
Casino and sports betting operators are still looking to create some action in Georgia, where the state has a lock on legal gambling in the lottery and has dealt others a losing hand for years.
A state House study committee will hold a hearing Monday in Savannah on “horse racing and betting as well as other matters related to gaming.” The committee previously received presentations touting fancy resort- and Vegas-style venues and millions in tax revenue.
Savannah Republican state Rep. Ron Stephens has been pushing to legalize casinos since his hair was black, he said this summer. But his colleagues have been turning down Stephens and allies for reasons from moral objections to an inability to decide how to split up the money. Besides that, constituents don’t tend to call up clamoring for a casino in their town; it’s very much a corporate push.
Conventional wisdom puts a coastal casino — if one is ever built — somewhere along Interstate 95 to catch vacationing motorists.
