Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Read Savannah’s spending plan

Savannah City Council is asking for comments at its next meeting on its $602 million budget for next year.

But they’re not deciding how to spend all $602 million, exactly. Because in fact, much of the budget is more-or-less fixed before budget season begins.

For example, the water, sewer and and sanitation bills you pay to Savannah go into accounts just for funding those things. The city council still oversees that spending, but it can’t take its roughly $145 million water, sewer and sanitation revenue and spend it in a completely different category like police or public art.

And that’s typical: Cities and counties normally set up separate “funds” for services that pay their own way, like water and sewer.

Savannah will also pay about $233 million for personnel next year. Any city might change personnel costs around the edges: via hiring freezes maybe or layoffs, or raises. But for the most part, the salary budget in a growing city goes up a little every year with inflation and staff headcount.

Check out the proposed budget book here to see where and how Savannah spends tax money.  The city council is taking comments at its next meeting on November 26 at 2:00 p.m.  If you can’t make it, send a comment to your alderman.

Savannah City Council meetings are among the 50 or so agency meetings that we track in coastal counties — keep scrolling. Even with Thanksgiving in the mdidle it’s a long list of meetings for the next two weeks.

As always, if there is a public entity you’d like to see, let us know. We’ll try to add it. This list depends on what local governments offer on the internet.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
