Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Why to read a budget

Every year, every city, county, school board and other government agency has to pass a budget.  That document lays out the different kinds of taxes and fees that are collected and where the money’s going.

The document can run hundreds of pages with lots of small-print tables, but there will be good larger-print summary info there, too: what the agency does, how much staff it has, how much money it’s taking in and spending. Chatham Area Transit’s latest budget document is typical: In there, we learn for example, that the whole budget is about $37 million, ridership is around 2.6 million and CAT runs several services, not just buses. (And note, tickets don’t cover much of the cost of transit in Chatham or anywhere else.)

To find your local government’s budget, do an internet search for the agency name plus a year and “budget.” Or, see if the budget is in UGA’s collection of local government budgets.  Some agencies work on a “fiscal” year that begins July 1; some use a calendar year.

This week, Bulloch County, Chatham Area Transit and the city of St. Marys have scheduled workshops on their next budgets and all three broadcast their meetings if you’d like to watch one. Or check out a meeting in your community from this list covering the next two weeks. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically. 

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
