Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

The two (or three) major boards everywhere

Each week, dozens of public boards meet, but the ones that have the biggest budgets and the most impact are county school board, county commission and, where they exist, city councils.

County school boards do what they say on the label: In Coastal Georgia, they run public schools all over the county, in and out of cities. 

To follow other local government topics like land use, parks, policing, street maintenance, even chicken-keeping, start with city council if you live in a city. All others: start with the county commission.

But don’t be surprised if getting to the right place is a bit more complex.

Cities and counties can share some duties, like Liberty County’s consolidated planning commission. It hears zoning applications, but city councils get a final vote on decisions in their municipal boundaries. 

And policing can come from the city or county. A typical city police department, like St. Marys, gets its budget from city council. Glynn County runs a county police department that gets its funding from the county commission.

And a county sheriff’s department is a separate organization from any police department. In every county, voters elect a sheriff but that sheriff depends on the county commission for funding their jail, their officers and equipment. 

Keeping up with all these boards and jurisdictions can be a lot.

This list starts with an automated collection that does not involve AI. It is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically. 

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
