Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.
School zone speed traps?
When folks tap the brakes by schools, it could be due to courtesy. Or it could be because of those speed cameras trained at the road, ready to snap a picture and signal a computer somewhere to mail out a speeding ticket.
The driver pays, the local government gets a cut of the money and the speed camera company gets a cut.
City and county police departments have been allowed to install automatic speed detection cameras at schools since the Georgia legislature authorized it in 2018. But our partner newsroom WABE reported last week that some Georgia House lawmakers are ready to cancel that bit of local control. Legislators who oppose the cameras say the devices can be faulty and the companies who run them unresponsive and the outcome is gouged drivers.
