Pooler mayor announces end of open mic

The mayor of Pooler is directing residents to an online portal instead of the City Hall microphone if they want to address City Council about anything that’s not on the agenda.

That means residents’ comments will land in an unpublished city inbox instead of being heard by everyone watching City Council meetings or reading council minutes. The Council, whose agenda is set by the mayor, will still take public comment on council agenda items, but not other topics.

Mayor Karen Williams, posting on Facebook, framed the end of open mic and the shift to an online portal as a move toward efficiency and to the benefit of residents who can’t make it to meetings or who don’t want to speak in public. Asked why the city can’t do both, a spokesperson said the city wants to avoid the appearance of giving preferential attention to people who speak in person.

In its first four days, residents used the portal to criticize the closure of the mic itself or growth that they see as unchecked and a threat to wetlands. Pooler provided the documents to The Current GA in response to an open records request.

Typically, public boards offer the public some time to speak on anything, though time limits or signup requirements may apply.
