Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.
Public water, public agreements
If you have public water, part of what keeps it flowing out of your tap is liable to be a pile of agreements between the cities and counties that pump, pipe, buy or sell water.
This sharing works best when there’s good feeling, cooperation and communication among local governments. Right now, Effingham County and Savannah are feeling good about $501 million in new state money for more water works in the fast-growing region, The Current’s Mary Landers reports.
That’s fine, but it leaves the question open of what happens if good feelings disappear and there’s no institutional place to work out water-sharing. As the saying out west goes: “Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over.”
If your city or county is making moves in the water market, buying wetland mitigation credits or raising rates, look for clues in public meeting agendas and consider watching a meeting online or in person. Here’s our list of public meetings over the next two weeks for all kinds of agencies. It’s a long list — keep scrolling or read in a browser. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.
