Find your public meetings, agendas

Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Some governments answer before you ask

Georgia law guarantees you the right to see documents from your local government, like budgets, zoning plans and public safety statistics.

And sometimes you don’t even have to ask.

The Glynn County Commission, for example, typically publishes reports with each of its meeting agenda items, so you can read along during commission meetings and see what the public officials see when they are discussing and voting. Bryan County Schools publish years of financial information. The Savannah police publish counts of benchmark crimes reported every week.

But if your local government doesn’t take the initiative to publish these documents, you can ask for your own copy.  Search the internet for your city council, county commission or school board clerk’s email address or a police public information officer’s address and send them a request.

Communities that preemptively publish documents have an easy response for you:  They can answer by just sending a link. Others will have to look for records and email you.

In the meantime, please use this list The Current has compiled of local government public meetings over the next two weeks. Try clicking around your community’s websites and see what they’re proactively publishing too. Let us know how you’re using this list or any suggestions you have for improvement.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
