Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Natural Glynn versus improved Glynn

Glynn County’s government has got a relatively good problem: the growth and popularity of St. Simons Island. That’s a better problem to have than decline. But still, the county’s angered some for proposing to bring out the bulldozers and construction equipment in places that are currently free, open to the public and fairly natural.

At Coast Guard Beach, the county proposes spending $3 million from a state grant on expanded parking, levelling a sand dune for a volleyball court, removing trees and filling a patch of wetland, The Current’s Mary Landers reported last week.  Further up the island, Jabari Gibbs reported that a proposed roundabout would gobble up part of the Old Stables Corner public greenspace at Frederica and Sea Island Road.

County governments are players worth watching in questions about roads, public parks and greenspace. City governments and the state may have a say too, but counties are liable to take the lead on traffic planning once you get off the interstate and state highways. And counties tend to own some parks, too.

County commission meetings and their records are public.  Check out our coastal public meeting list for the next two weeks to see if yours is meeting and what their plans are.  Let us know how we’re doing with this list, how you’re using it or ideas you have for improving it.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
