Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

County, judge, people in front of the bench

A McIntosh County judge finds himself on the other side of the bench, brought there by his own county, while the county itself is brought there by its own people – all part of a legal tangle over the powers of local elected officials that’s resulting in a stack of lawyers’ bills piling up at the county commission.

The McIntosh County Commission has racked up nearly $40,000 in legal bills in two months fighting a Sapelo Island zoning referendum that it had argued would be too expensive to hold, writes The Current’s Mary Landers. It’s her latest coverage of the questions around civil rights, zoning, public access, judicial power and election law triggered by the county’s decision to allow larger houses in the historic Hogg Hummock community.

Counties have enough legal questions and sue and get sued often enough that every single one has a county attorney to handle day-to-day wrangles; contract attorneys can come in for bigger cases.

To see what your county or other local government agency is up to, check out our list of public meetings over the next two weeks.  We’re tracking 50 agencies and counting — keep scrolling, it’s a long list.

As always, if there is a public entity you’d like to see, let us know. We’ll try to add it. This list depends on what local governments offer on the internet.

Listen Up!

What does it mean to vote for the soul of a nation? In Episode 6 of Coastal Navigator, we explore into how faith has impacted this election — how voters and faith leaders alike are understanding the candidates and the future of the country. From the pews of a “gospel get out the vote” event to the voices of pastors on both sides of the aisle, we dig into how faith affects our communities and our choices ahead of Nov 5. Look for the next pod at this link — and catch up on ones you’ve missed.
