Looking into the DA’s books

A public prosecutor and the five southeast Georgia counties he serves have got a money problem: he says his counties are holding back funding, but Glynn County wants to know why exactly his spending is almost seven figures over budget.

Brunswick-area District Attorney Keith Higgins is scheduled to speak to Glynn County commissioners about it at a work session on Tuesday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. 

Higgins is faced with American Rescue Plan (ARPA) prosecutor funding expiring at this month’s end. He is set to present a plan to county commissioners to keep his office staffed with 12 prosecutors. If county commissioners deny the plan Higgins will be left with 10 prosecutors to cover a circuit with the geographic size of the state of Delaware. 

“Glynn is the largest of the five-county circuit that he manages, with the most crime to prosecute and funding to offer, but the district attorney’s political and professional relationships have soured after a budget crisis last year,” wrote The Current’s Jabari Gibbs last week, in the latest update on the monthslong budget crisis. 

It’s worth watching the meeting because it’s the one public venue where details might emerge that so far have been unknown to taxpayers. The county also published an agenda a few days before the meeting — that way, the public can know when important questions about their money and communities will be discussed.
