Our thoughts go out to the Fort Stewart community following Wednesday’s shooting there, and our hearts go out to the victims. Thanks to the soldiers, first responders and all those called to duty.

CAMDEN COUNTY
Paddleboard along the St. Marys Waterfront: Catch the tides and the sunrise on the St. Marys River for the St. Marys Inaugural Sup Sesh. The stand-up paddleboarding event takes place Sunday, Aug. 10, from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the St. Marys Waterfront, 7 St Marys St. W. Admission is $50 if you do not have your own equipment and $20 if you bring your own. Call or text Jeffrey Batton at (954) 681-2447 to reserve your spot. Spaces are limited.
BRYAN COUNTY

Municipal election: The period to qualify for Richmond Hill’s 2025 general election will begin Aug. 18 at 8:30 a.m. By Aug. 21 at 4:30 p.m., those planning to run for mayor or city council will have to pay a $450 or $300 qualifying fee, respectively, to the city clerk’s office.
GLYNN COUNTY
Coast Guard transitions oversight of Brunswick East River sheen response to the EPD: A unified command (UC) was established in May 2024 to investigate the source of the surface sheen that has tainted the waterway since February 2019. Based on the scan results, the UC identified the source of the discharge as the Ocean Petroleum property at 1025 Bay Street. Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division will now lead the remediation activity.
Wellness walk coming up The City of Brunswick has announced that the annual wellness walk will take place on Sept 27, 2025. The walk will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Harold E. Jennings Wellness Park. Registration is $15, but it includes a t-shirt, light refreshments and some exclusive wellness swag.
CHATHAM COUNTY

City Hall celebration: Savannahians can return to City Hall on Thursday, Aug. 14, following completion of the first two phases of the City Hall Interior Restoration Project. Public open house and tours starts at noon. An archival display will be up in the restored Archives History Room on the first floor featuring artifacts related to City Hall’s construction, restoration, and history. Click for more info.
Back to school block party: The first week back is always the hardest. Reward you and your children for making it at the Greater Gaines Chapel AME Church block party, located at 1006 May St. The day will be full of fellowship, games, music and food from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9. Free backpacks filled with school and supplies and uniforms will be available while supplies last.
LIBERTY COUNTY

Walthourville millage rate hearings: Citizens of Walthourville can voice their thoughts about a proposed 12-mill property tax rate to pay for city services. Hearings will take place at the Walthourville Police Department, 192B Talmadge Road. on Thursday, Aug. 7 at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 14 at 11 a.m., and again at 6 p.m. This would be the city’s first-ever property tax.
Run for office in Midway: It’s time for candidates to qualify for the mayoral and council races in Midway. Prospective candidates can register between 8:30 a.m. Aug. 18 and 4:30 p.m. Aug. 22 at Midway City Hall, 41 Charlie Butler Road, for the Nov. 4 general election. Fees are $324 for mayor and $162 for council. You must have lived in the City of Midway for the past 12 months, stay there while in office, and be a registered voter qualified to vote in Midway’s municipal elections.
Run for office in Flemington: Qualifying for the general election is 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. from Monday, Aug. 18 through Friday, Aug. 22 at City Hall, 156 Old Sunbury Road. You must be 18, a qualified registered voter, a Flemington resident for 1 year, and stay there while in office.
MCINTOSH COUNTY
Coastal film fest: The Darien-McIntosh County Chamber, Georgia Conservancy, and Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve are hosting a Tides & Tales Film Fest at Tabby House Brewing Company on Thursday night, which will show short films that highlight the history and importance of McIntosh’s marshes and coastline. Tickets to the event are $15 for general seating and include a drink ticket. Seating is limited.
Waterfront Concert Series continues: The next installment of the Darien Waterfront Concert Series will be at the Waterfront Park on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. Roy Gentry and the Hired Guns are the featured performers.
EFFINGHAM COUNTY
Georgia seniors shift from college to trades: As an increasing number of high school students shift to pursuing trade jobs over college post-graduation, Coastal Georgia programs are leaning into the trend by providing classes focused on life and soft skills over SAT prep, The Current’s Tyler Davis reports.
Get involved: Effingham County is looking to fill a variety of vacancies on boards and councils including the Board of Elections and Aging Services Advisory Council. Get more information here.

Local dad creates autism resource app: Jamario Davis, a local Georgia parent, created GeorgiaAutismResource after having a tough time tracking down nearby therapy centers, diagnostic clinics and support groups.The app is available to download for free on the Apple App Store.

Richmond Hill airport plans cruise ahead despite questions about cost, transparency

The Richmond Hill City Council is considering building a new airport estimated to cost $128 million with the goal of increasing tax revenue and providing much-needed hangar space for local aviators. Residents have expressed concerns about the increased traffic, noise, and lack of transparency surrounding the project.

Hyundai quiet on local water use

Liberty County commission to hold impact fee hearings
