The Current GA, in collaboration with ProPublica, has received an Honorable Mention in the prestigious Best in Business Awards from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing (SABEW).

Margaret Coker

The recognition honors “Broken Pathways: How the Nation’s Only Medicaid Work Requirement Experiment Fails Georgians,” reported by Margaret Coker, editor and co-founder of The Current GA.

The Best in Business Awards are among the most competitive honors in journalism, recognizing outstanding reporting that demonstrates impact, depth, and relevance to the public. The award places The Current GA’s work alongside leading national and international news organizations.

The “Broken Pathways” project examined Georgia’s Pathways to Coverage program, the only active Medicaid work requirement program in the nation, and documented the barriers preventing eligible residents from accessing health care. The reporting highlighted systemic issues affecting low-income Georgians and brought national attention to the program’s real-world consequences.

“This recognition reflects the kind of journalism we’re committed to,” said Coker. “We want to understand how these systems are actually affecting people’s lives, and make sure those stories are seen and heard. That’s where accountability starts.”

The collaboration with ProPublica combined national investigative resources with deep local reporting across Coastal Georgia and the state, reinforcing The Current GA’s mission to deliver in-depth, accountability-driven journalism to the communities it serves.

The Current GA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom dedicated to reporting on the issues shaping life across Coastal Georgia. Its work focuses on accountability, public policy, environment, and community impact.
