A recent shortage of these containers is raising costs and snarling supply chains of thousands of products across the world. The situation highlights the importance of the simple yet essential cargo containers that, from a distance, resemble Lego blocks floating on the sea. 60% of the world’s good are packed in them.

Nagurney is the Eugene M. Isenberg Chair in Integrative Studies at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Previously, she was the John F. Smith Memorial Professor of Operations Management at the Isenberg School. in 2001, she founded the Virtual Center for Supernetworks at the Isenberg School, where she continues to serve as Director. She has had over 200 journal articles published and 15 books on various network themes including supply chains. Her recent awards include being elected a Fellow of the Network Science Society in 2019 and also receipt of The Constantin Caratheodory Prize from the International Society of Global Optimization. In 2020 she received the Harold Larnder Prize, and is only the second female to receive this award, which has been given annually for 35 years.
