Defunding an airport board

Bryan residents in the room clapped when their county commission voted 5-1 last week to stop any funding for a proposed county airport. 

Airport boosters’ financial arguments are not supported by credible evidence, according to the county commission’s resolution. As The Current GA has reported, even if Bryan County had five times as many airplanes as the 34 it does now, local taxes on planes and airport buildings over two decades would fall short of making up the $66 million airport construction cost to federal and state taxpayers.

Commissioners are also asking the Georgia legislature to suspend the work of the Richmond Hill-Bryan County Airport Authority, a body that state lawmakers created just last session to oversee airport efforts and which commissioned the financial report. The airport authority cancelled its December meeting.
