Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Asking the state for money, laws

As the calendar nears January every year, Georgia’s local governments prepare wish lists to send to the state Legislature.

Counties, cities, school boards and other agencies make their cases for laws or funding that they think will improve operations or public services. Or they argue against what they see as unfair state policies. They may hire their own lobbyists as well as joining statewide organizations.

The Chatham Transit Authority, for example, will have their own lobbyists and will direct them to “aggressively pursue” state money to help pay for bus replacements, an additional ferry and other capital expenses. 

To see your community’s requests, look for a “legislative agenda” on public meetings documents in the coming weeks. If one isn’t published, you can ask if one exists and get a copy via an open records request.
