Welcome aboard! This is a list of public meetings and agendas to help you follow the work of officials you’ve elected.

Local control, or not

There’s a saying at the Georgia legislature in Atlanta: “Everybody’s for local control, until they’re not.” That is to say, there’s supposed to be in trust the most local government that’s closest to the people — until the moment somebody higher up sees unruliness in the cities, counties and school boards.

Right now, some Republicans at the Georgia Capitol fear that counties, cities, schools and their local law enforcement agencies might not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. It’s true that the hunt for so-called “sanctuary cities” in Georgia hasn’t turned up much, despite a state board that spent years looking for them.

But a new bill in the Georgia state Senate has got sheriffs and education wonks concerned about what more exactly the Legislature might want from its local governments. Our partner publication, Georgia Recorder,  reports that state Sen. Blake Tillery, R-Vidaila, has gotten a bill through committee that would require local governments to help enforce immigration law, or face lawsuits.

Yet sheriffs point out that state law already requires them to cooperate with the feds. As for schools, a federal court case says kids have a right to education regardless of their immigration status. It would be yet another job for teachers if they’re supposed to call the police if they hear of an undocumented student, parent or guardian.

If you have thoughts on local control — or just want to know more about what local governments do, please enjoy our list of local public meetings that you can see over the next two weeks. Let us know how we’re doing with this list, how you’re using it or ideas you have for improving it.

This list starts with an automated collection and is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information.  Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
