McIntosh meets twice in a week over Sapelo zoning

After McIntosh County’s planning board on Tuesday voted to set aside a controversial new zoning proposal for Sapelo Island, and with an August deadline for action quickly approaching, the McIntosh County Commission had to do at least one thing quickly: call another meeting.

County commissioners and the stakeholders of Hogg Hummock — one of the last intact communities of the descendants of enslaved West Africans known as the Gullah Geechee — have been in a battle at ballot boxes and in courtrooms over zoning since 2023. That’s when the county approved zoning to allow 3,000-square-foot houses on Sapelo Island, triggering fears of gentrification and sky-high property taxes among Gullah Geechee longtime residents.

Friday afternoon, having had little time to review it, commissioners voted to advance a zoning ordinance that would limit houses on the island to 1,550 square feet under roof with a 400-square-foot porch, as The Current GA’s Mary Landers reports. The zoning board is scheduled to hear the proposal at its Aug. 4 meeting.

Public bodies like county commissions can call special meetings on as little as 24 hours’ notice. Sometimes it’s hard to find the special meetings because the public notice can be as little as a piece of paper posted at the meeting room door.

But McIntosh posted notice of this one online with the rest of its agendas, so we found it. Find other meetings of note along the whole coast with our public meetings calendar, which covers the next two weeks.

Send staff@thecurrentga.org a selfie from any meeting on this list and we’ll send you a t-shirt from The Current GA.

This list starts with an automated collection that does not involve AI. It is checked and edited by a human. But agencies may announce new meetings, change meeting times or cancel them, sometimes without any online notice. Some publish calendars in more than one place with different information. Some rely on Facebook posts which may require a login to read and cannot be collected automatically.

You may want to call ahead and verify the meeting time and place, especially for smaller agencies.
