CHATHAM COUNTY
Pollinator count: Join the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, a hands-on citizen science project created by the University of Georgia. All ages can help protect pollinators by observing and counting the amazing insects visiting flowers in the Garden City library’s community garden. Stop by the library, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug 21 and 22, to pick up official census counting sheet. Come to the community garden for a fun outdoor adventure in insect spotting and identification.
Film honors Ossabaw legacy: “A Taste of the Wild: The Legacy of Sandy West,” a documentary screening and discussion with the filmmaker Megan Mayhew Bergman, at 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Telfair’s Jepson Center, 207 W. York St., Savannah. Admission is $8.

Pieces for Soldiers: Dock Side Quilts of Valor Chapter will meet to create quilts for military personnel from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. fourth Mondays at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 165 Camden Woods Parkway, Kingsland. Public is welcome; bring your sewing supplies. Call 912-673-8662 for info.

BRYAN COUNTY
Free Disposal Day: Bryan County landfills will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. or when capacity is reached, Saturday, Aug. 22. Acceptable items include nonperishable and nonhazardous items, as well as furniture and vegetation. Open to Bryan County residents only. Two locations: Mill Creek, 7392 U.S. 280, Pembroke, and 184 Fort McAllister Road in Richmond Hill.
Covid shots available: Cases are rising a bit so here’s how to avoid the downtime. The health departments in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh Counties are offering covid vaccine without a prescription, the Coastal Health District announced.

GLYNN COUNTY
Fire academy: Glynn County Fire Rescue invites community members to join the 2026 Citizens Fire Academy, an eight-week program offering residents a behind-the-scenes look at their local fire service. The first class begins Thursday, Oct. 1. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early. Throughout the academy, attendees will meet members of Glynn County Fire Rescue, explore equipment and apparatus, and learn about the department’s daily responsibilities. Whales at The Ritz: At 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 21, at the Historic Ritz Theatre, a screening and panel presentation for the new documentary “The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope” from Spindrift Images will be held. One Hundred Miles will moderate a panel presentation with the filmmakers and Georgia DNR biologists Jessica Thompson and Tripp Kolkmeyer. This event is free, but your pay-what-you-can per-person donation will directly support OHM’s North Atlantic right whale advocacy and education efforts. More info here.

Farmers and Makers Market: Come stroll through the tents at Hinesville Farmers and Makers Market from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20, at Bradwell Park, 107 S. Commerce St. Featuring local fresh produce, crafts, baked goods, and food trucks, as well as the splash pad where kids can cool off. Saturday morning group walk: Join the Hinesville Walking Club from 8 to 10 a.m. at Krebs Community Park, 1534 Airport Road, for a fun, friendly way to get your steps in and meet your neighbors! MCINTOSH COUNTY
Be a Bark Ranger: Celebrate National Dog Day at Fort King George in Darien from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. Any owner who brings their furry friend and completes a small photo scavenger hunt can be sworn in as an official Bark Ranger. Visitors will earn a special free doggy medallion upon completion. All dogs must remain on a 6 -foot leash while on state property. Click for info.

Hurricane Registry: Residents who have medical needs, physical disabilities and other transportation limitations and who need assistance have two options to register for help for hurricane evacuation. Residents of Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long and Mcintosh counties may call 833-243-7344 or visit the Coastal Health District website at coastalhealthdistrict.org/registry to download an application.
