CHATHAM COUNTY
Celebrate the Carnegie Library: The Carnegie Library Heritage Center will honor its 112th birthday with a party at 2-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14 and a 2 p.m. screening of excerpts from “Are You a Librarian?” a documentary by African American librarian Rodney Freeman, featuring staff interviews; 3 p.m. organized tour; 4 p.m. vocal performance & drum/shakers with songwriter and artist, Temakha. Savannah Memory Project: “StoryRoots: Mapping Savannah’s History” info session and training on the city’s memory collection efforts from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug, 14 and 15. Bring up to 20 items to scan, or sit for an oral history interview for Savannah District 3 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, or 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, at PARC, 425 Pennsylvania Ave. Learn how to document your own community at 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.. Skates Night at the Park: The 912 Skaters Coalition holds an all-ages skate 7-9:30 p.m. every Thursday at Lake Mayer Park, 850 E. Montgomery Cross Road, Savannah. Featuring tunes by DJ Live Child. Free skating; Cash App tips to $djlivechild. The group is working to create a safe, inclusive skating facility in Savannah.
Veterans Art Studio: The Telfair Museums’ veterans-only studio program offers a calm, open approach to drawing and painting with guidance from an experienced instructor, 1-4 p.m. every Saturday at the Jepson Center, 207 W. York St. Savannah. You don’t need experience in making art. Studio space allows artists to work independently, but you can request guidance from an instructor as you wish. Savannah Photo Club: Beginner to pro, cell phone to Hasselblad – come meet other photographers for coffee and a photo walk Sunday, Aug. 16 (3rd Sunday). Connecting with neighbors: The Bryan County branch of the NAACP will host speaker Wendy Sims Futch, executive director of the Bryan County Family Connection, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at Pembroke Library, 180 James St., Pembroke. Free and open to the public.
Free Disposal Day: Plan now. Bryan County landfills will open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. or when capacity is reached, Saturday, Aug. 22. Acceptable items include nonperishable and nonhazardous items, as well as furniture and vegetation. Open to Bryan County residents only. Two locations: Mill Creek, 7392 U.S. 280, Pembroke, and 184 Fort McAllister Road in Richmond Hill.
GLYNN COUNTY
Superfund trip: From 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug.15, the Glynn Environmental Coalition will travel around Glynn County to visit and learn about local hazardous waste sites. Participants will meet in the parking lot off Union Street, 777 Gloucester St., Brunswick. This is a free community event, and the first six RSVPs will receive free transportation.
Library meetings and survey: Residents are invited to help shape the future of libraries and community spaces in Glynn County. The county will hold two public meetings on Thursday, Aug. 13, and residents may share ideas for the Facilities Master Plan. The first is at 1 p.m. at the St. Simons Island Library & Casino Building, Casino Auditorium, 550 Beachview Drive. The second is at 6 p.m. in the Future Library Branch (Brunswick Library), 208 Gloucester St. An online community survey is open through Aug. 27. Landfill Amnesty Day: McIntosh County residents and property owners can dump for free 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Aug. 15. Bring photo ID and proof of property ownership. Acceptable waste can include construction materials, yard waste, cardboard, and other items. Unacceptable items include mattresses, furniture, tires, liquids and electronics.
