Letter from Folkston processing center

In a prison run for profit in far southeast Georgia, some 500 people are refusing food in protest of the conditions of confinement and what they say are violations of due process and asylum laws by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Forty-five of the protestors seeking asylum in the United States evoked the Declaration of Independence — the part about life, liberty and pursuit of happiness — in a signed public letter claiming there’s no legal justification for their prolonged detention. Read their letter here or skip straight to The Current GA’s Jabari Gibbs’ coverage of the Folkston ICE processing center hunger strike.

Chatham emergency operations center delayed

Another $1 million in spending has been approved for the long-awaited Chatham County emergency operations center that won’t be complete until November 2027. Project manager John Wright told commissioners the project is 50% ready, contradicting the most recent project report quoting 42% completion, just 1% further than the June projection. Read more on the emergency operations center’s standing in the story by The Current GA’s Adithi Vimalanathan.

Barbershops have long served as a place for Black men of all ages to engage in candid conversations, a fact that A Better Glynn capitalized on for an event promoting civic engagement, as The Current GA’s Jabari Gibbs reports. Discussions focused on the importance of voting to make sure Black voices are heard.

Conservationists are concerned that land swaps at Cumberland Island National Seashore could lead to the construction of up to eight private mansions on Georgia’s largest barrier island, The Current GA’s Mary Landers reports. The National Park Service defends the proposed footprint of 15,000 square feet per 2-acre parcel as average for Camden County.

“They eat almost everything, it’s impressive.” The Cachena, a small breed of cow native to Galicia, Spain, is believed to be protecting the region against wildfires by putting their big appetites to good use. After a 2017 fire destroyed 80% of the forest in Vinicios, the community decided to begin breeding the Cachenas and other grazing animals. There have been no serious fires since then.
