NEWS: ELECTIONS

Midterm early voting begins
It’s finally here. Your chance to use your voter voice starts Tuesday as early poll locations open across Georgia. You can request an absentee ballot by mail as late as Oct. 23, but you have to get it mailed and returned to your county’s elections office by 7 p.m. Nov. 3. We’ve set up a list of early voting and dropbox locations for you by county, as well as handy links to all things election. We’ll continuously update the page and candidate info through Nov. 3.

Neighbors meet to clear the air
Last week, frustrated Brunswick homeowners had a chance to air their grievances about dust problems in their neighborhoods. In the long-awaited town hall, they met representatives from companies they hold responsible for the dust blanketing their homes and, according to some residents, endangering their health. The dust problem isn’t new, but the effort to talk it through is. In 2024, The Current GA reported on the residents’ concerns about the dust, noise, and airborne health threats from the warehouse. The Current‘s Jabari Gibbs reports on the meeting and the optimistic outcome.

Chalk drama: Reading the police reports
Two Effingham residents spent hours in jail, a result of the combined work of two police forces, accused of an action that took a few minutes and didn’t survive a water hose.
At an Aug. 29 public meeting, as county commissioners were indoors taking flak from residents over a data center plan, deputies outside came across an insult against one commissioner chalked in the parking lot. Read the Effingham Sheriff Office’s initial incident report, the Springfield Police Department’s account of receiving the case, or skip straight to Maggie Lee’s coverage of the arrest of two people for criminal trespass.

Electric vs. diesel for truckers
Diesel fuel prices may be skyrocketing but soon some truckers won’t have to worry about that. Tesla unveiled a bay of six new Megachargers for electric Tesla semi trucks at a Pilot stop in Ellabelle. Each can add about 300 miles of charge to a Tesla semi in about 30 minutes. With diesel at record high prices, the clean, zero emission trucks can save at least 50% in fuel expense. Environment reporter Mary Landers reports on the new chargers and what they could mean for shipping costs and drivers.
POLL: ELECTIONS

So, you like the peach….
…or you just hate the new sticker design? We know change is hard, so last Sunday we asked you about the new “I voted” sticker we grab like kids when we leave the polls. We may not have opinions here at The Current, but our readers sure do! Here’s a sampling of what you told us:
Peach lovers said, about the new one:
- ‘Looks almost violent.”
- “Gives an aggressive vibe.”
- “The peach felt personal. This does not. It feels hard’
- “Everyone loves a peach. The capitol building represents different things to different people. Good things do not necessarily originate there.”
- “What a waste of money.”
- “Reminds me of Jan. 6”
- The peach “represented the true happy feeling for having voted.”
People willing to give the new one a chance:
- “It sure beats ‘I secured my vote.'”
- “It’s patriotic.”
- “Colorful and attractive”
- Makes me feel proud to let others know that I voted. May encourage others to do so.”

DATA: HEALTHCARE

☕ Your second cup: Healthcare & access
KFF, a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to providing facts around healthcare, has an in-depth, easy-to-parse presentation just in time for the midterms. It’ll help all of us ask better questions of our candidates and look at our own daily choices. Maps and data help cut through political rhetoric and teach us more about our neighbors. One example: 1 in 10 people in Georgia’s 1st Congressional District gets health insurance via the Affordable Care Act, so those higher rates cut close to home. Here’s the link — Enjoy.
