NEWS: ELECTIONS

Last week of early vote arrives
As of Saturday evening, 1.6 million voters had cast a General Election ballot in Georgia — a 22.6% turnout from more than 7.5 million active voters. Along the coast, county turnouts have averaged more than 20%, except for Chatham which showed 18.21%. Even with that it was the strongest voter total outside metro Atlanta, placing 9th in the state. Glynn County holds high turnout percentage ranking among coastal counties at 26.2%. So, all of this means shorter lines on election day, and that’s the only analysis we’re making here. With races too close to call and candidates working every corner of the state, it’s a race to Nov. 3.
We’re cheering for all of you who’ve already voted, and we want to help you out if you’re still doing your homework (We cheer that, too.). We’ve got what you want: a breakdown of candidates for almost every state race, what those confusing ballot measures really mean, and early voting locations with a map. Want more stories around the elections? Here you go.

Partial data on Flock cost, hundreds of cameras
At least 512 Flock cameras from 18 law enforcement agencies track drivers through Coastal Georgia, according to a two-month investigation by The Current GA‘s Adithi Vimalanathan.
In Savannah alone, the cost of monitoring has come to more than $1 million — and at least six employees have been fired for misusing the surveillance network that tracks license plates. Check Savannah’s line-by-line equipment and renewal costs in a city purchase order report, or skip straight to the story.
NEWS: IMMIGRATION

Another death, more scrutiny
Saturday brought word that another detainee has died at the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Folkston. The announcement of the death sparked a call for an investigation into conditions there by the state’s US senators, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. All this comes amid a hunger strike by many detainees. Read more about the growing concerns for those who are awaiting hearings for immigration status from The Current‘s Jabari Gibbs and Craig Nelson.
Another note: A judge on Wednesday blocked US Homeland Security from executing election-related field operations in nine states, including Georgia. The move came after voting rights advocates said armed agents were going to homes to question residents about their voter status. Read the story here.
NEWS: JOBS

Jobs and more
The week brought two announcements to the area that add up to hundreds of new jobs: Hyundai has added a second shift to the Ellabell Metaplant, and Mitsubishi Power Americas said it would expand its Chatham County plant to add 220 new jobs. Mitsubishi makes gas turbines and electrical generation equipment, an industry that grows along with power demand from data centers and other industries. Hyundai expanded its wastewater permit in order to grow its production capacity to 200,000 cars annually.
